The Southern African Botanical Products Association (SABPA) presented at the Organic & Natural Product Expo in Cape Town on Friday 28th March 2025. The Expo took place at the Cape Town International Conference Centre and the Conference had a packed line-up from Friday 28th through to Sunday 30th. Ulrich Feiter spoke generally on indigenous plants in South Africa, he introduced what SABPA is about and touched on the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (NEM:BA) and the challenges it raises for botanical product companies and the biodiversity economy in general.
Thomas Brendler introduced the topic of international regulations in both the European Union and United States, highlighting the differences in legislation especially around food ingredients, dietary supplements and medicines.
Suzette Trevor, Lead Buyer of Dohler SA Botanical Extracts Business Unit presented on the history of Doehler Group, a global family-owned business, and its substantial investment in Paarl, South Africa. The BE unit capitalises on South Africa’s unique flora – showing how the unique attributes of plants such as Sceletium, Buchu and Honeybush can feed into trending global health focus area and concerns.
Jo-Anne Fourie – Sales and Marketing Manager at The Honeybush Company – revealed her passion for the Honeybush industry and why Honeybush tea is truly one-of-a-kind, with individual harvests being shaped by soil, climate and harvest season. Nevertheless, companies like the Honeybush Company are focussed on harvesting, artisanal production methods and quality assessment which can lead to a more consistent cup of tea, every time.
The day consisted of 2 SABPA presentations, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, both were very well attended. The question-and-answer sessions allowed attendees to request support finding botanical products suppliers, permit applications, and some specific questions around processes at Dohler SA (i.e. sugar reduction).
All in all, it was a good day, a great engagement with the public and the organizers, and SABPA will likely be presenting at the Sandton Expo in October 2025 again.
