ABOUT SABPA
Leading the sustainable growth of the Southern African botanical products industry by enabling and promoting access to global markets.
ABOUT US
SABPA is funded through the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs under its ABioSA programme managed by the German Governments Entity for International Cooperation (GIZ) as well as through membership fees. The ABioSA Phase II aims to develop the Sceletium Sector alongside other indigenous biological resource (IBR) sectors such as Buchu, Honeybush, Rooibos, Baobab & Marula.
SABPA formed in 2023 when funding was received for the sector development project. We have been a registered NPO since 2023 and are fast becoming the representative Business Support Organisation for Sceletium and other underserved indigenous plant species. Besides market development and awareness raising activities, strategic partnerships, advocacy and research, we are playing a role in improving analytical methods and thus quality of botanical products, with an industry Code of Practice and Quality Seal in the pipeline. Another area of focus is ABS compliance for Traditional Knowledge. We have already engaged in the process to negotiate an industry wide BSA-TK agreement for Sceletium species with the Traditional Knowledge Holders. We also offer ABS services (support) for members and non-members who are looking to become compliant for a portfolio of indigenous plant species.
