The Southern African Botanical Products Association (SABPA) hosted a successful Symposium on Commercialisation, Market Access, and Sustainable Supply Chain of Botanicals in Cape Town on 23rd October 2024. The Symposium was held as a side event of the joint meeting of the 23rd International Congress of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology (ISE) & the 2nd International Congress of the African Phytomedicine Scientific Society (APSS). The one-day event was ably introduced by Mr Khorommbi Matibe of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, which spurred animated discussion. SABPA hosted a range of local and international speakers. Maven Mirran Raphaely – co-founder and partner, BeyondBrands USA – who enlightened the attendees on the US market for Botanicals. Josh Schneider of Cultivaris – who delighted the attendees with his story of the commercialisation of Breadfruit. Prof Alvaro Viljoen of Tshwane University of Technology – who made sense out of some of the more complicated science of botanicals.
The Symposium covering many additional aspects of commercialisation of botanicals had in attendance industry members, academics and some representatives of government. Seemingly the only real complaints were that the time was too short and the venue too small! SABPA will take note of recommendations for a future event or events – and will likely offer a webinar series by some of the speakers as well. Details of all future events will be shared with SABPA subscribers, at SABPASymposium – SABPA and on Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/company/southern-african-botanical-products-association/.
Attendees of the 2024 Symposium on Commercialisation of botanicals should look out for a survey link, speaker presentations and event photographs link that will be shared by SABPA in the next weeks.
